Seasonal Changes for Spring

Are you noticing a shift in your cravings as Winter gives way to Spring? The arrival of warmer weather often marks a decline in our desire for the heavy, substantive foods so essential during the winter months. You may notice an increasingly insistent preference for lighter fare. Your appetite may decrease and you may find yourself craving fruit, fresh vegetables, and salads galore. This is your body’s way of telling you that it’s time for some spring-cleaning!

Spring is a time when the body’s detox pathways naturally rev up to do some deep cleaning. Just like you may feel an urge to clean and declutter your home during Spring, it's equally important to prepare your body for the season's changes.

Kapha dosha, which is the water and earth element, is highly accumulated in the body from the winter months. This can be experienced as winter weight gain, feeling heavier and more tired than usual.

During this transitional time, your body is preparing to shed that excess weight and toxins stored during the winter months, so you're ready for the high-energy days of summer.

Making changes to your diet and routines will maximize your body’s natural ability to release what it no longer needs.

But if we don’t alter our diet and routines, perpetual slow digestion may lead to excess congestion and mucus, sinus and chest congestion, seasonal spring allergies, coughs, clammy skin, and continued weight gain and lethargy.

The key elements to a Supportive Spring diet is “Lightening Up” and “Stoking our Inner Fire”.

What to change in Spring:

It's time to start reducing the heavier foods that sustained and nourished us through the winter months! Focus on lighter foods with warming spices, stay away from cold drinks and foods. Reduce congestion with Neti pot. Enjoy detox practices like sauna, dry brushing and self-massage. Your yoga practice this time of year should be also be stimulating and invigorating.
